The amazing dyke

In Frisia, the north west of Germany storm tides appear every two to three years and can kill up to 50000 people and destroy houses and landscape. To protect themselves the Frisians build little hills and on these they build their houses. Later they build a big dyke all along the coastline. One big storm came 1362 and the flood destroyed the dyke in 21 places and 50000 people died.
(A dyke is a big dam and it is 9 meters or higher)

On the two pictures you can see a sluice. It is a special gate that only let the river out and not the sea in.
